Rotto: Instant Messenger on Mobile

What is it?

   It's a solution allowing the exchange of instant messages between users. In this solution we have two or more people joined together in a discussion. Any user can send a message and all other parties will receive it. In case any user is offline, then the message will be kept in a safe place for him/her to retrieve later once they are back online.  

How does Rotto work?

   The solution consists of a server application and a client application. The client application is a java application installed on the user's mobile. The server application will be installed on the side of the operator. It will allow client applications to connect to it, and it will respond to their requests, passing messages and information between clients. 

  The client application can also be used as a bridge to connect the client to any Jabber service such as AIM®/iChat, MSN®/Windows Live™ Messenger, Yahoo!®, ICQ®, Jabber® and Google Talk™ or any jabberd XMPP server, Wildfire, eJabber. Or it can work as a standalone client/server solution where the messages are routed on the operator's side. So the user will still be able to connect to its old friends using their old accounts and can find new local friends on the operator. 

Why not use just any IM?

They have several disadvantages:

  1. Each IM works only with one platform. 
  2. Slow response time
  3. IM services are not guaranteed. Any service can be denied immediately from the original service provider.
  4. Not customizable.

What are the advantages of IM to the operator?

  1. Better GPRS penetration. 
  2. Increase APRU
  3. Lot of users will switch from popular IM to use the local one to create local communities.
  4. Lower the SMS load on the operator
  5. Create new ways of communications
  6. The application can be branded to the operator.
  7. The application can be used as an advertising tool. Most users will have it installed, and most are checking it on daily basis.
  8. The application can be dynamic, allowing the user to access other services of the operator.

What are the advantages of IM to the end-user?

  1. users will be able to exchange messages at low cost.
  2. Easy interface in your local language.
  3. The interface can be similar to instant messenger and/or email.
  4. Users are no longer limited with 160 characters per message
  5. Users can join email groups.
  6. Users can exchange not only text messages, but also sound and/or video messages.
  7. Users can exchange any kind of files (Word, Excel sheets.  .. etc)

Business Model?

We can see the following three possible models:

  1. Monthly subscription with unlimited messages.
  2. Pay per message
  3. Monthly subscription (small) plus extra payment for traffic.
